B

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my years of being a kid, it’s that you have ZERO control over your own life.

Ever since school ended, I haven’t had anything I’ve needed to do or anywhere I’ve needed to be. As long as the air-conditioning(空调)was working and the TV remote had batteries in it, I was ready for a relaxing summer holiday.

But then, out of the blue, this happened— “Pack your bags. We’re going on a road trip!” Mom said excitedly.    This isn’t the first time Mom has sprung a trip on us without any warning. Last year on the first day of summer,

she said we were going to visit Aunt Loretta at the nursing home.

It wasn’t exactly my idea of a fun way to kick off the summer. One time when we visited Aunt Loretta, her roommate grasped me and wouldn’t let me go until someone gave her a chocolate cookie!

Mom kept talking about going to the nursing home for a whole day, which made me worry a lot. But at breakfast the next morning, she told us where we were really going—Disney World.

I was very happy, because I was really worried about spending the whole week at the nursing home. So was Dad. But when my little brother, Danny, heard about the change he became very angry.   Mom had talked up the Aunt

Loretta trip so much that Danny was actually excited about going there.

We ended up putting off our trip to Disney so we could visit Aunt Loretta.

I tried to talk Mom into letting us do something normal, like going to a water park for the day, but she didn’t want to hear it. She said that spending a lot of time together in the car would be a “bonding” experience for the whole family.

64. What did the author prefer to do during his summer holidays?

A. Visit Aunt Loretta.

B. Travel with his family.

C. Look after his little brother.

D. Watch TV comfortably at home.

65. From the passage, we can learn that the author .

A. loved his aunt very much

B. got pretty excited about the road trip

C. felt helpless with his mother’s surprise trips

D. blamed Danny for not going to Disney World

66. Who makes the final decision in the family?

A. The author. B. Mom. C. Dad. D. Aunt Loretta.

67. The author wrote the passage to .

A. remember his mother B. tell the story of his aunt

C. express his love for his brother D. share with readers his childhood experiences

C

This is a story told or read to children of young ages. The heroine (女主人公), Cinderella, treated cruelly by her

stepmother and her two ugly stepsisters, is helpless until the right magic comes along. She meets her prince and they live together happily.

Just a sweet, pretty tale? Not in the view of Ellen Macintosh, who has written much about fairy tales. Ellen’s main concern is with what the story implies. “Instead of standing up to her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella just waits for a fairy godmother to appear and solve her problem. But wouldn’t you want a daughter of yours to show more spirit?”

The story is long-lasting, whatever its shortcomings, and it doesn’t take much to see its influence on a number of recent Hollywood productions. In these versions for the silver screen, the Cinderella character no longer has to clean the house and has no sisters to make her life terrible, though she keeps the way of not showing much courage. The character of the rich and handsome stranger, however, is kept, and in some cases really is a prince. The role of the fairy godmother is often played by luck; we live in a civilized age when even very young children might reject the idea of fairies. In the majority of film versions, the heroine has a profession and is even permitted to continue working after marrying her prince — this is the twenty-first century, after all.

Doesn’t the success of these films indicate that the story has relevance to children even today? “Yes,” admits Ellen, who sees its message as being rooted in a fundamental childhood desire for love and attention. “Most children experience a sense of inner loneliness as they are growing up and empathize with (与…共鸣) the character who faces

some sort of challenge. This can be seen in the original story of Cinderella, where the fairy godmother tells the heroine that she must learn to be gracious and confident if she is to go to the ball. She has to grow spiritually, and by maturing, she becomes attractive to the prince, thus ensuring that the ending of the story will be happy.” “In the later versions, this element is missing,” says Ellen, “and the theme of the story is simply that a girl’s role in life is to be more beautiful than other girls so that she can carry off the prize: the handsome prince. Is this really what we want girls to grow up believing?”

68. Why does Ellen disapprove of the Cinderella story?

A. The plot is too simple.

B. The description is not vivid.

C. The heroine is not brave enough.

D. The story is unfit for the children today.

69. In the film versions of the Cinderella story, .

A. luck plays an important role in the heroine’s happy life

B. Cinderella’s family background remains unchanged

C. the heroine becomes a successful career woman

D. the character of the prince is removed

70. According to Ellen, the film versions of the story .

A. succeed because of the happy ending

B. ignore the children’s psychological need

C. deliver a mistaken message that beauty is everything

D. reflect modern people’s attitude toward challenges in life

71. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To analyze the characters of the Cinderella story.

B. To introduce different versions of the Cinderella story.

C. To explain the changes of the Cinderella story over time.

D. To present a different understanding of the Cinderella story.

Culture and Cuisine

The United States is known for jazz and blue jeans. But travel to Paris and ask your average French citizen about American cuisine (烹饪) and he’s likely to answer, “ McDonalds.” Ask the same thing of any American citizen on any American street and I’m afraid you’d get the same answer, or something close to it.

Hamburgers and hotdogs and fries are all fine, but with American malls and other outlets standardizing everything from clothing to food, the sad truth is that American cuisine is becoming more homogeneous―all the same―no matter where you live. True, many Americans are eating more varied foods these days, but these are largely the cuisines of immigrant groups, and they are quite likely to be affected by homogenization of American cuisine.

So what exactly is American cuisine? Well, to some extent it is a reflection of our melting pot culture, meaning that Europeans made huge contributions in the form of wheat, dairy products, pork, beef and poultry. But American cuisine also includes products that once were known only to the New World, including potatoes, corn, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.

The one region of the country where you still find all these things in daily use is the Deep South. The South lost the Civil War, but children of the southerners are winning the battle to preserve

and advance their cooking traditions—and in this case one of the few cuisines can truly be called American, which is why we’re pleased to have  Low Country cuisine in this issue of food creation. That’s right, grits and gravy are back in a big way in cities like Charleston and Savannah. Truth is, they never really left, but up until a decade ago Low Country cuisine was more common at home than in restaurants.

In fact, a large number of tourists now go to the lower Atlantic region in order to experience this extraordinary cuisine for themselves. Time will tell whether Low Country cuisine becomes popular in other regions of the country in the way that, say, Italian cuisine has, but it’s amazing and heartening to see one of our true cultural treasures enjoying renewed popularity in these increasingly homogeneous times.

72. According to the passage, American cuisine impresses people as being .

A. dull and changeless B. rich and various

C. popular and delicious D. disagreeable and unpleasant

73. It can be seen that the writer feels regretful that .

A. cuisines of other countries play a more important role in America

B. American cuisine has become increasingly lacking in variety

C. American cuisine tends to vary because of immigration

D. American cuisine is being changed by foreign cuisines

74. From the passage, we know that grits and gravy .

A. were cooked with new materials after the Civil War

B. are gaining popularity in the south of America

C. were more popular over ten years ago

D. are seldom served in restaurants

75. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the renewal of Low Country cuisine in America?

A. Concerned and cautious. B. Hopeless and doubtful.

C. Positive and supportive. D. Critical and disapproving.

Experts say over half of the world’s 7,000 languages are in danger of disappearing. Every two weeks one language disappears. As the last speakers of a language die off, the valuable information contained within a

language also disappears.

76

What would happen if you were the only person left who spoke your language? Who would you share stories

with, sing songs to, or exchange jokes with?

77

This is the example scientists use to explain the situation

of many people around the world whose local languages are disappearing.

Sometimes a language disappears immediately when the last person speaking it dies.

78

This happens

when an official language is used more often and children stop learning the local language of their parents. This is not a new process. Official languages often represent a form of control over a group of people. Throughout history,

the language spoken by a powerful ethnic (种族) group spreads across a kind of culture.

79
