If you’re a sports fan,you have definitely heard the word “hat trick”.

Based on a definition given by the Oxford Dictionary,a hat trick is essentially an achievement,by either the offensive or defensive player in a game, who achieves a performance by completing three goals, within a given time or within the fixed rules, completing which would earn you a “hat trick”.This could be the scoring of three goals,in games like soccer or the taking of three strikes like in baseball. But certain restrictions must be followed.

The word was first used in 1858 in the game of cricket.Back in those days, the fans would hold a collection of proceeds (收入) for any player who performs extraordinarily in a game, and that collection is awarded to the player. So when a bowler named H.H.Stephenson took three wickets (板球中的三柱门) in a row with three successive balls, the observers bought a hat and gifted it to him along with one of the three balls, which later spread to other sports events like soccer and became a tradition.

So,we covered the “hat” bit. But what about the “trick”?Back in the 19th century, magicians performed the famous hat trick that included pulling rabbits and doves out of a top hat. That became known as the “Hat-Trick”.

Now let us see what meaning it took on in soccer (football).

● In soccer,a player scoring three goals in a single game at any point of time is known as a hat trick.Any goal scored in a penalty shootout (点球) is not added towards a hat trick, but shots taken in added time and extra time still count.

● A player who achieves this is awarded.

● A “perfect hat trick” is a type of hat trick where the individual player scores one goal with his left foot, one with his right, and one as the result of a header. This can be achieved in any order.

● Three successive goals by a player is called a “perfect hat trick”.

If you have ever done competitive sports, you will know that starting a new season means a lot of hard work and practice.36  Here are a few ways to make sure that you’re ready for the first day.

37  Schedule specific workout times during the week to help you stick with it.Ask your coach, gym teacher or trainer for some advice before writing your plan.Besides, write down how long you have worked out and what activity you have done.

Ask your coach if you aren’t sure what you need.New equipment can be expensive,so think about using some second-hand equipment if it’s available.Brothers, sisters and friends can be great sources of used equipment.38  You can ask your coach to take a look at it before the first day of practice. If you are a returning player, take out all your equipment, try it on and make sure that it still fits and works.

39  Sports camps can help new and experienced players brush up on skills before the season starts.College players, coaches or other professionals usually teach in the camps. Many schools and colleges offer various sports camps during the summer and on the weekend during the school year.

Your school or team will probably require a physical check before allowing you to participate.Because everyone needs to get checked at the beginning of the season, doctors tend to be busy those times of the year. Therefore, set up an appointment with the doctor earlier.40

Dear boys and girls,

Good health is essential to everyone, without which one can hardly live a satisfactory life.As students, when longing to learn better,we shall in the meanwhile act actively for good health.

Here are some of my suggestions.First,we’d better do more exercise such as playing basketball, running or swimming to build up our body.Second,we should have a balanced diet.Don’t eat too much meat or sugar but more vegetables and fruit.Third,we need enough sleep and rest, and we shouldn’t stay up late because it is bad for our health.Besides, keeping ourselves happy is also very important.I hope we are healthy and enjoy our life.

Thank you!

A young man and a young girl fell in love. But the man came from a poor family. The girl’s parents weren’t too happy. So the young man decided not only to please the girl but to please her parents as well.In time, the parents saw that he was a good man and was worthy of their daughters’ hand.

But there was another problem:The man was a soldier.Soon, war broke out and he was being sent overseas for a year. The week before he left, the man knelt on his knee and asked his lady love,“Will you marry me?” She wept happy tears, said yes,and they were engaged. They agreed that when he got back in one year, they would get married.

But tragedy struck.A few days after he left, the girl had a major vehicular accident. It was a head-on collision. When she woke up in the hospital, she saw her father and mother crying.Immediately, she knew that she must have been badly injured.

She later found out that she suffered brain injury. The part of her brain that controlled her face muscles was damaged. Her once lovely face was now disfigured.

She cried as she saw herself in the mirror.“Yesterday I was beautiful.Today,I’m a monster.” Her body was also covered with so many ugly wounds.Right there and then, she decided to release her fiancé (未婚夫) from their promise. She knew he wouldn’t want her anymore. She would forget about him and never see him again.

For one year, the soldier wrote many letters—but she wouldn’t answer. He phoned her many times but she wouldn’t return his calls.

But after one year, the mother walked into her room and announced,“He’s back from the war.” The girl shouted,“No!Please don’t tell him about me.Don’t tell him I’m here!”

注意:续写词数应为150左右。
