Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospital. I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

“How much do I pay for you?” she asked.

“Nothing.” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”

22. How was the old woman?

A. She was fine, but she wanted to have a family.  B. She missed her hometown very much.

C. She was ill, but not serious.   D. She was ill and she was dying.

A. wanted to do her a favor                 B. shut off the meter by mistake

C. had received her payment in advance      D. was in a hurry to take other passengers

25. What can we learn from the story?

A. Giving is always a pleasure.             B. People should respect each other.

C. An act of kindness can bring people great joy.

English teenagers will receive cooking lessons in schools. The idea is to encourage healthy eating to solve the problem that many people are overweight. Also, it worries people that basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost because parents use too much pre-prepared fast food.

Cooking was once regarded as an important part of education in England—even if it was mainly for girls. In recent years cooking has become less important in schools. But the rising level of obesity(肥胖的) has led to rethink about the food that children are given and the skills they should be taught .

“What we want is to teach young people how to do basic, simple meals, which they can use now at home and then in their life,” said Ed Balls, an education expert.

The new lessons will start in September, but some schools without kitchens will be given a longer time to prepare. Also, there may be a shortage of teachers with the right skills, since schools have been teaching food technology rather than practical cooking. Besides, the lessons for hand-on cooking will only be one hour a week for one term. But the well-known cookery writer, Pru Leith, believe it will be worth it.

“If we’d done this thirty years ago we might not have to face the problem about obesity and lack of knowledge about food and so on. Every child should know how to cook, not just so that they’ll be healthy, but because it’s a life skill which is a real pleasure.”

The renewed interest in cooking is an effort to reduce the obesity rate, which is almost the highest in Europe, and according to the government, half of all British people will be obese in 25 years if present trends(趋势) are not halted.

26. The passage mainly talks about ________.

A. the reason for obesity              B. the lost cooking skills

C. the healthy eating                D. the cooking classes

27. Which of the following is NOT the aim of bringing back cooking lessons in Britain?

A. To encourage teenagers to eat healthy food.

B. To reduce the country’s increasing obesity rate.

C. To prevent basic cooking and food preparation skills from being lost.

D. To encourage parents to use more pre-prepared fast food.

28. How will cooking lessons do good to the students?

A. All of them will become good cooks in their later life.

B. Students will be healthy and enjoy the pleasure of such a life skill as well.

C. Students will be able to make food experiments with the knowledge and skills.

D. Students will be able to control the level of obesity in the whole country.

29. The underlined word “halted” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.

A. continued      B. stopped       C. discussed        D. kept

30. It can inferred from the passage that ________.

A. cooking has always been an important part of school education in England.

B. English teenagers will have their cooking lessons one hour a month for one year.

C. the obesity rate in Britain has been growing rapidly in recent years.

D. the students will pay much money for their cooking lessons.

Hello, everyone!Every day we hear different kinds of sound around us. From the last class, we have known that it’s because the air takes the sound to our ears. But what about a solid, like a ruler or a stone? These solid things are unlike air or water. Can sound TRAVEL through them? Which can hold sound travel better, the air or the solid? Let’s do an experiment.

First pick up the wooden ruler on your desk. It’s 25cm long. Hold one end of the ruler 2cm from your ear. Make sure that the near end of the ruler is 2cm from your ear. It’s very important. Now knock on the far end of the ruler. Yes, I mean you make some sound on the ruler with your fingers. Can you hear the sound you make? Pay attention to how loud the sound is. Next move the ruler 27cm away from your ear and knock on the near end, so that you are making noise at the same distance from your ear as before. Compare the sound you hear with that you heard just now.  Which one is louder? Yes, the first sound is much louder. That is, the sound is much louder when it is carried by the wooden ruler than by air. From this experiment, we can see that solids are much better carriers of sound than air or water. Do you know why? Read the book from Page 53 to Page 58 and discuss with your group members. We’ ll share our opinions in twenty minutes.

听力测试到此结束,请同学们把答案转涂到答题纸上,然后接着做笔试题目。
